These customers had a problem with pits that appeared in the P20 steel used to make molds for automotive fascias and bumpers.

Prior to our involvement, the tool makers tried to eliminate these pits by polishing them out which only opened up other pits in adjacent areas. Welding and similar processes were not suitable because of the large number of defects and the fact this was a mold surface with significant visual impact to the finished product. Any marks or waviness would be very apparent to the end customer.

Metalon developed a process for coating these areas with a copper alloy which had a similar hardness and grain features as the base metal. This coating could be applied in the field to reduce transportation costs and downtime for these critical components.

Our company has now repaired quite a few of these molds which has resulted in significant savings for the manufacturers and the mold makers.
