When a customer called from California regarding problems with a blown film extrusion die, Metalon was asked to do some investigation regarding the performance of the existing coating. Citing a possible compromise of their competitive position, the customer did not want to reveal exactly what was in the plastic formulation.
Our investigation revealed, however, that the coating itself was not being attacked. Rather, it was of such a porous and thin nature, the underlying substrate was being attacked which subsequently led to the coating simply falling off.
Due to the design of the die which had specific parameters with respect to clearances and pressure drops, it was not possible to replace the coating with a thicker one. Metalon therefore, recommend a different material which we applied and led to a significant improvement in performance and customer satisfaction.
